The community of Yucuruchi is located on the Ucayali River, Loreto, Peru. The community is organized in a direct line away from the river, thus many of people walk long distances to getch water. Their water was sourced from the river and it is often contaminated, causing illness among the community. This project was the first rain catchment project the chapter has worked on in Peru. It is a four tank, 10,000L capacity system tied into their schools roof for rainwater collection.

 

In April of 2023, an assessment team came by and determined a location for a new rainwater catchment system to be located by their existing school, as well as a distribution system to tap further along the village. 

 

In December of 2023 and February of 2024, the implementation of the system commenced. The first group worked on the site and structure, while the second group worked on the mechanical work, trenchwork, and downstream tap. 

 

The team revisited the community during the 2025 assessment trip and had very good feedback from the community. Water tested showed zero signs of bacteria and the people said illnesses had plummented throughout the year. During the monitoring trip in 2026, parts and pieces of the system were replaced and the community shows signs of handoff and ownership of the system. ​​​​
